The Industry-standard Large-diaphragm Condenser

The Neumann U 87 Ai is the modern incarnation of a classic microphone. Introduced in 1967, the U 87 gained instant favor with engineers, producers, and their clients; by the mid '70s it was a staple in every world-class recording studio. And it still is. Walk into a session, and you'll see 87s everywhere. On piano, vocals, toms, overheads, guitar cabs, brass, strings, congas — you name it. The mic's popularity is easy to understand: it ushered in a new era of audio fidelity and reliability, and with three selectable polar patterns (cardioid, omnidirectional, and figure-8), plus a switchable highpass filter and 10dB pre-attenuation pad, the mic is incredibly versatile, and an ideal choice for a broad range of recording techniques. The Neumann U 87 Ai is the industry-standard large-diaphragm condenser mic. Read on to find out what it can do for you.

A great choice for most any source

When you're striving for fidelity, clarity, and authoritative presence, the U 87 Ai — with its ruler-flat midrange and gentle presence boost — is your go-to mic. We all need vocals to shine in the mix, and the 87 was born for this. It's not right for every vocalist, but you will find it the vocal microphone of choice on innumerable iconic recordings. Piano? Grand or upright, when you need an acoustic piano to sit pretty in a thick track, a couple of 87s will get the job done.

Switchable polar patterns

Offering a choice of three switchable polar patterns (omnidirectional, cardioid, and figure-8), the U 87 Ai gives you impressive flexibility when it comes to exploring different recording techniques. With two 87s, you can implement stereo techniques such as spaced pair (A/B), X-Y (including Blumlein), ORTF array, and mid-side (M-S). For full orchestra, add a third 87 for the minimalist — and highly effective — Mercury Living Presence technique: three spaced omni 87s across the orchestral soundstage, centered above the conductor's podium.

Updated with modern circuitry

Neumann produced the original U 87 from 1967 to 1986, when it was replaced by the current version, the U 87 Ai. The U 87 Ai features upgraded electronic components; however, the capsule design remains unchanged. The modern circuitry increases the mic's operational headroom by reducing the resistance through which the capsule bias voltage is supplied. This gives you 10dB higher sensitivity for identical sound pressure levels and improves the signal-to-noise ratio by 3dB.

Filter and attenuation

If you're using the U 87 Ai to capture a loud source, the microphone's switchable 10dB pre-attenuation pad comes in handy. With the pad activated, the mic accepts sound pressure levels up to 127dB — perfect for miking tom toms or a dimed guitar amp stack.

An additional switch engages the mic's low-frequency cutoff, which reduces undesirable mud and rumble at the input of the microphone amplifier. This setting also compensates for proximity effect, the bass boost that all pressure gradient transducers exhibit when placed very close to a source.

Neumann mics are not assembly-line products

In 1928, Georg Neumann founded the company that bears his name and introduced the first mass-produced condenser microphone, the CMV 3, a.k.a. the Neumann Bottle. Ever since, the Neumann badge has stood for unwavering quality. Neumann's instantly recognizable diamond is more than a corporate logo — it is a quality seal. Every microphone that bears it is testimony to this proud tradition. This level of excellence requires rigorous quality control to maintain Neumann's status as a leading manufacturer of studio microphones. Neumanns are not assembly-line products; they're handcrafted in Germany by highly skilled technicians.

Precision crafted for world-class performance

The distance between membrane and electrode of a mic capsule is 35 microns — less than the width of a human hair. The layer of gold applied to a U 87 Ai capsule diaphragm is just 0.03 microns thick, equivalent to 208 atoms of gold. Even minute levels of contamination can adversely affect sonic characteristics, which is why Neumann mics are assembled in a state-of-the-art clean room with monitored dust levels under 100 particles per cubic foot — suitable conditions for the production of semiconductor chips and heart catheters.

At Sweetwater, we know what it takes to become a world-class manufacturer. It's not enough to build one great mic; the real trick is to be able to supply the pro audio industry — year after year — with units that all sound identical. To this end, Neumann sets the tolerances of each microphone to the minimum possible variance as compared with an equivalent Neumann product. This is what some mic manufacturers do with matched pairs — but Neumann does it for all their microphones. So when you use two 87s to capture an accurate stereo image, you can do so with confidence.

U87 AI

I've owned my U87AI for a while now. I've heard people say on YouTube and such, it doesn't really matter, get a less expensive mic, there isn't that much difference. Well,I also own TLM 103 by Neaumann as well. A TLM 103 is around $. There is no doubt in my mind the U87AI is the clear winner;I would choose The TLM103 over any other lower priced in the area of a thousand give or take. Get the U87, it's great for singing,voice-over,piano,percussion etc... If you want to go to next level and beyond get the U87AI, even the Beatles used it. Cheerio

Very High Quality Microphone and Legendary Sound

The famous Neumann U87ai. The microphone is found in many studios. Its legendary reputation goes back to the Neumann U47 used by so many famous artist even today. Neumann were pioneers in microphones. The quality is unmatched. When opening a new Neumann microphone from the box and you can see the quality right away exceeds really anything. The sound is 3D and just right.

The Neumann U87ai is the most accurate and neutral microphone I've ever heard. If you're looking for a colored microphone this might not be the one. But it has a very professional sound right out of the box. No EQ needed. If you do voiceovers this is probably the best microphone. It just sounds polished and right, especially in the midrange. Pair it with the Avalon 737 preamplifier and you have excellent voiceovers. I use a Neumann Pop-screen and Neumann Wind Cap over the microphone because it is quite sensitive. It will record anything with accuracy.

There are microphones with more character, many microphones might sound "bigger" like the Neumann M149. But the Neumann U87ai just sounds realistic and nice. It's easy to work with, well made, and sounds very good to the ears. Definitely recommend having one. I love tubes and if vocals are your primary things then maybe the Neumann M149 would be ideal.

Paired with Avalon VT-737sp exposes your natural vocal range and all the flaws you may or may not have in acoustic treatments

I am thoroughly pleased with this microphone. Moving up from the Blue Rocket Stage One Locker to this met my expectations. I enjoy the Stage One and will continue to use it, but not for lead vocals unless I need a specific sound I desire that a capsule is designed to bring.

Proper set up of the Avalon with this microphone [read the Avalon manual stages to configure and ignore the preset options] for your vocal range really shows that this microphone never wilts under and extreme vocal pressure on it. It captures the softest most quiet presence to the open falsetto sustains with ease. I'll use it and will add another one to my collection down the line. In tandem with the likes of the Avalon you really give your voice so many options when recording. Worth every penny.

Gik Acoustics offers phenomenal panels and as I mentioned any gaps in room treatments can be discovered with this microphone, if you are listening for them. The 2A Alpha Pro Series Panel Diffusor/Absorber panel set will be my next purchase to make sure the Neumann captures the best possible atmosphere around the voice.

Worth The Price

I went through several clones like the Stam Audio, Warm Audio, ect. and also have owned many different mics. Online forum boards would lead you to believe it is harsh, but this is not the case. With that said I don't use it on bright sources because I have ribbons or other mics for that. The recordings you get are musical, huge, and have an airy sitting on a cloud feel. It handles all sorts of transients very well and takes eq amazingly well. I can literally shape recordings into anything and sounds like it was made that way.

NOTE: This mic is VERY dependent on the preamp you use. Some mics are just better with a higher-end pre, but this one can make you go WOW! It loves premium gear. Invest in an Avalon, BAE, or other high-end pre as part of the purchase, and perhaps a compressor.

I have been in audio for 10 years and used this prior, but just picked it up now. This is NOT recommended if you are inexperienced, or do not have a base of good mics, or are expecting this to make your songs amazing. Mixing is where that happens, but this gives you a great foundation to work from. I sold several mics recently to fund a second u87 as I just love them!

I mean... It's a U87

Been a professional producer and engineer for over 25 years. I record a lot of vocals and have used a lot of different microphones. The U87 has a reputation for a reason. It sounds great on everyone because it is flat and its presence is unmistakable. It's legendary. You cannot go wrong.

However, if you are a hobbyist or semi-professional with a limited budget and a less than optimal recording environment, this mic will not be the answer to your problems. In other words, if you are recording with an attachable booth shield behind your mic into a budget USB interface, your money will be better spent elsewhere. You can get a TLM 103 for a third of the cost and spend the difference on a premium pre-amp and acoustic treatment for your recording space. Microphones like the U87 and Sony C800 are built for high end professional applications. They provide the tiny margin that studios need to set themselves apart. You do not need to commit to one unless you already have a super high end set up and can afford the luxury.
