A Broadcast and Studio Standard!

Like its gray sibling, the RE27N/D is a large diaphragm dynamic mic that excels at many studio and broadcast tasks. Voiceovers are the RE27N/D's bread and butter, letting the human voice come through with the perfect blend of warmth and intelligibility. But the RE27N/D doesn't stop there! Bass cabinets, kick drums, guitar cabinets, singers, percussion.... the RE27N/D can do it all. So with a design that's so similar to the legendary RE20, what makes the RE27 different (aside from the slick metallic finish)? The RE27N/D has slightly more output thanks to the neodymium magnet and the output sound is a bit brighter. Any way you slice it, the RE27N/D is an awesome mic!

Electro-voice RE27N/D Dynamic Mic Features:

Very versatle

I bought this mic for male vocals, and for that it delivers. However, I've found it to also be the go-to mic for recording my 5 string banjo and my double bass. I have a workhorse bluegrass banjo, and this RE-20 placed in the back of my banjo under my armpit with a small condenser mic in front to capture the upper range is great way to get a good banjo recording without the harsh overtones associated with recording banjo. For my double bass, I've discovered that this works fabulously on it when placed in front of the f holes and blended in with the pickup track. My double bass is a student model with a bright tone, and the RE 20 knocks out the highs and delivers the lows. I use a good pre-amp that boosts the Re 20's input signal for both bass and banjo. I HIGHLY recommend this mic for male vocals, banjo, and double bass.

RE-27

First of all , my wife loves the friendly interactions with the staff and support given before and after the sale . I am involved in the broadcast industry , and for most part , we use the RE_20 . She decided to buy me a microphone , to use at the studio . I love the RE-27 and now , when on the air, I use my own mic.

Truly a stellar all purpose VO mic

I had been looking at getting an RE20 as it's the most venerable of the RE series, I'd even come to love the battleship color of it... but then Sweetwater had a demo RE27N/D available for sale. It arrived in perfect condition, in box, with all expected parts (as described in the demo listing).

TL;DR, I love it, it's great!

If you like the RE20 / SM7b sound
From listening to the RE27 videos I was a bit worried about how bright it could be, and it really can be very bright which can hurt sibilant voices (which includes me and my sometimes whistling teeth). However, the -3db high shelf adjustment brings it back quite well for a closer to neutral profile. As I understand it, even with the high frequency reduction it will still be brighter than the RE20, but less noticeably so. In my opinion it ends up being a more lively mic than it's cousin or the SM7b while still having a rich low end, at least down to 100hz.

The hotter output of the magnet has also made this a very easy mic to work with on a scarlett 2i2 / Audient id4 - plenty of preamp power before maxing out without any need for a fethead/cloudlifter (2-3 o'clock for the more affordable preamps - I tend to use around 45 db of gain, as measured in the UAD console when pairing with an apollo interface).

It has quickly become my absolute favorite general VO mic. It is definitely has that 'broadcast' sound and if you turn it on "flat" switches (which will be a boosted high range) it has a very crisp modern sound, I don't like that setting for my voice most of the time, but if you have found yourself adding extra air in your EQ this may be the mic that leans more into your voice.

RE27N/D on Ham HF Station

Bought this mic and a Heil PR40 to compare them on my ham HF radio station. Both are high quality mics.
I like the RE27N/D best.
The ability to use the filters on the mic instead of going to the radio settings to change parameters is a great advantage.
Settings for local conversations are different that what is needed for DX conversations, so the RE27N/D gets my vote.

Excellent

The original RE20 is a broadcast industry stalwart. The RE27 features the same excellent build quality, noise rejection, and sound quality of the original, but with added frequency response controls and a fancy new satin finish.

The much added versatility provided by the controls makes it one of my favorite go-to mics. It’s excellent.

Remember, match the mic to the voice or application. You’ll have to dial in the sound you wish to achieve.
